The Castle of Mussomeli is a monument set between the wonderful Vallone’s lands, in the Caltanissetta countryside, and it is one of the most fascinating structures ever, combining history and legend.
Its construction lasted only three years, between 1364 and 1367, on the foundations of an old fort from Slavic times. With its strategic location and external façade blending into the limestone rock, it provided great security from a military point of view for a long time. Its position and appearance make it truly unique compared to other fortresses.
Today the castle is largely known also out of Sicily, where the legends and the stories regarding its walls circulated for centuries, granting it huge and immortal fame: among them the tragic story of Laura Lanza, Carini’s baroness, or also the event of the Spanish Guiscardo de la Portes at king Martin I of Sicilia’s service, remembered as the ghost of the manor.
